Job Summary
A Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides essential support and services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, helping them live independent, fulfilling lives. DSPs assist with daily living activities, community integration, health and safety, and personal goal achievement, all while respecting the dignity, choices, and rights of those they support.
Key Responsibilities
1. Personal Care and Daily Living
- Assist with hygiene, dressing, bathing, grooming, and toileting as needed
- Support individuals with meal preparation, feeding, and dietary requirements
- Assist with medication reminders and documentation, under supervision
2. Community Engagement
- Facilitate community outings, recreational activities, and social events
- Encourage participation in educational, volunteer, or employment opportunities
- Support transportation needs using agency or personal vehicle (as applicable)
3. Independence and Life Skills
- Teach and reinforce skills such as budgeting, cooking, cleaning, and communication
- Promote decision-making, self-advocacy, and goal setting
- Follow individualized support plans (ISPs) and behavior plans
4. Documentation and Communication
- Maintain accurate and timely records of services provided, incidents, and observations
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, team members, family, and healthcare providers
- Participate in team meetings and trainings
5. Health and Safety
- Monitor health conditions and report concerns immediately
- Support safe environments and respond appropriately to emergencies
- Use appropriate lifting, transferring, and positioning techniques
